Travel Nha Trang: Walking street to be launched in 2010

Walking streets are a cultural feature of modern urban centres, attracting visitors of special tastes like walking, shopping and sight-seeing. They are also a series of interactive spaces for tourists and local citizens. The idea of developing a walking street in Nha Trang has been entertained by the provincial People’s Committee since 2004 and Nha Trang administration was then assigned to research and implement.

The plan aimed at serving entertainment and leisure demand of local citizens and giving more tourism products. After being under revisions of the provincial People’s Committee and relevant agencies, the walking street will be perfected and is scheduled to be in operation in 2010.

The new plan proposed by the consultant (Viet Tin Real Estate Investment and Consultancy JSC) received big consensus. All relevant agencies agreed that forming a walking street in Nha Trang City would be an essential element to promote tourism in the area. This would also bring opportunities for investors and help put retail outlets along Tran Phu Street in order.

Understanding the fact that a zone for walking street only is not available and it would be very inconvenient for city traffic to develop a purely tourist walking street, the consultant recommended to open the walking street, which includes Tran Phu and Biet Thu Streets, at certain times. In initial stage, the street would be in operational from 18:00 to 24:00 on Saturday and Sunday.

There would be such activities as souvernir shopping, painting contests, exhibitions, musical performance, magic performance, sport activities, martial performance, marketing activities of traders… along with eating and drinking services.

It is expected once the walking street is in operational, it would satisfy the needs of local citizens and tourists, while fostering the existing trading activities in the street, raising turnovers from advertisement, stimulating handicraft production in the area.

Walking street is a newly-developed plan of the municipal city of Nha Trang and there are still a lot of things to do. Functional agencies, therefore, will track the progress and make appropriate adjustment in order to turn it into a unique tourism product of the city.
